This workshop will outline the benefits of confocal microscopy in infectious and non-infectious corneal diseases, keratitis, corneal pain and systemic neuropathies. It will furthermore propose standard-operating procedures and the use of artificial intelligence for improving and simplifying analysis.

    Confocal microscopy has enabled to non-invasively investigate the ocular surface and cornea on a cellular level in-vivo, allowing to detect and analyze the corneal layers, nerves, immune cells and pathogens. Although the technology is available in specialized centers, it is not generally used such as optical-coherence tomography or other non-invasive imaging modalities due to challenges in its handling and necessary expert knowledge to interpret results.
