ForSight Robotics Reports Fully Robotic-Assisted Cataract Surgery Performed Within Standard Clinical Workflow

The company's latest clinical experience, bringing its first-in-human study to a total of 26 patients, shows, according to the company, complete robotic execution of all procedures, use of standard cataract anesthesia protocols, same-day discharge, and integration into routine clinical practice.

ForSight Robotics, a company developing robotic systems for eye surgery, reported a further step in the clinical development of ophthalmic robotics, saying that fully robotic-assisted cataract surgery can be integrated into the standard clinical workflow of the world's most commonly performed surgical procedure.

Building on the first-in-human procedures announced earlier this year, ForSight Robotics has completed an additional 14 fully robotic-assisted cataract surgeries using its JASPER™ Robotic Surgical Platform, bringing its total first-in-human clinical experience to 26 patients.

According to the company, all 26 procedures were completed robotically without conversion to manual surgery. All patients underwent surgery using standard cataract anesthesia protocols, receiving either topical anesthesia alone or mild sedation, and all were discharged the same day, consistent with standard outpatient cataract surgery.

"Cataract surgery is performed more than 30 million times each year worldwide, making it the world's most commonly performed surgical procedure," said Joseph Nathan, MD, MSc, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of ForSight Robotics. "Our first clinical milestone established that fully robotic-assisted cataract surgery was possible. This latest clinical experience shows that robotic cataract surgery can integrate into the way cataract surgery is performed every day."

The procedures were performed as part of the company's ongoing first-in-human clinical study by Dr. Alexey Rapoport, with Dr. Robert T. Ang, Senior Consultant and Head of the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Services at the Asian Eye Institute in Makati City, Philippines, serving as Principal Investigator of the study.

"One of the notable aspects of this clinical experience has been how the robotic platform fits into routine cataract surgery," said Dr. Ang. "Patients underwent surgery using the same anesthesia approaches we use every day, either topical anesthesia alone or mild sedation, and were discharged the same day following standard postoperative care. The robotic platform complemented rather than disrupted the normal clinical workflow, while providing what we assessed as strong precision, stability, and control."

According to the company, JASPER™ is the first robotic surgical platform designed to perform the complete cataract procedure through surgeon-controlled telemanipulation. The platform combines bimanual robotic manipulation, high-definition three-dimensional visualization, real-time eye tracking, motion scaling, tremor elimination, and computer vision technologies intended to support surgical precision while the surgeon retains control throughout the procedure.

The company describes the expanded first-in-human clinical experience as another step as it advances toward further clinical studies and regulatory submissions. By demonstrating compatibility with the standard cataract surgery workflow, including routine anesthesia practices, same-day outpatient care, and consistent robotic execution, ForSight Robotics says it continues to build evidence to support the use of robotic technology in ophthalmology.
