Orthoptics crash course for eye care professionals

As part of their CPD-accredited teaching session, Alis will be delivering “Orthoptics Crash Course for Eye Care Professionals” on Saturday 28th February, 15:30-16:30 at 100% Ophthalmology Event. Designed for non-orthoptist clinicians working in eye care, this practical session will:

    • Clarify the differences between ophthalmic professions
    • Explain when and why to refer to an orthoptist
    • Clinical skills for a basic orthoptic assessment
    • Highlight red flags in ocular motility and orthoptic conditions that require prompt action

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

    • Differentiate the roles and scopes of practice of orthoptists compared with other ophthalmic professionals.
    • Identify key clinical scenarios where referral to an orthoptist is appropriate and beneficial for patient care.
    • Demonstrate fundamental clinical skills used in a basic orthoptic assessment, including ocular movements.
    • Recognise red flag signs in ocular motility and binocular vision that require urgent orthoptic or ophthalmological input.
    • Apply enhanced interdisciplinary understanding to improve patient pathways and collaborative care within eye services.
    • Attendees will leave with greater confidence in navigating interprofessional roles, making appropriate referrals, and spotting red flags for orthoptic conditions, ultimately supporting more integrated and effective patient care.

Stroke-related visual impairment consequences - who, what, when, where, and why?

Stroke can have serious detrimental effects on the visual system and cortical processing including eye movement disorders, visual field impairment, low vision and perceptual and cognitive difficulties. While many visual disabilities are easily recognised and diagnosed, other, more subtle, defects remain harder to diagnose with important implications. This presentation will overview the types of visual impairment that may occur because of ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke, and risks factors for developing visual impairment.

    • The importance, options and timing for visual screening and assessment in acute care settings will be reviewed, alongside an outline of visual rehabilitation options, recent changes to National Stroke Guidelines, and access to eye care for this specific population.

Speakers: Fiona Rowe, Professor of Orthoptics - University of Liverpool
