    This course is extremely valuable for qualified practitioners either new to the specialty or recently qualified and associate/assistant practitioners or theatre support practitioners who wish to develop their knowledge. It may also be of interest to Operating Department Practitioners who want to bolster their skills and knowledge within ophthalmology.

    Course content

    • Applied anatomy and physiology of the eye
    • Ocular examination - anterior segment examination including lid eversion
    • The tear film - estimation and treatment
    • Tonometry
    • Pupillary pathways RAPD and pupil abnormalities
    • Optic nerve examination
    • Estimating visual acuity (including colour, reading etc)
    • Taking and recording an ophthalmic history
    • Systemic effects of illness on the eye
    • Ocular movement
    • Principle of visual fields
    • Lasers and the eye including laser safety
    • Optics and refraction including understanding refractive prescriptions
    • Principles of biometry and a scanning
    • Visual pathways and the effects of abnormalities
    • Intra and post operative complications of surgery
    • Pharmacology and the nurse as prescriber
    • Drops are drugs applications and instillation, compliance and concordance
    • Legal and professional issues -
      - informed consent
      -The nurse and the law including Royal College of Nursing guidelines

    Aims and Outcomes:

    • Develop and enhance skills and knowledge in ophthalmology practice
    • To introduce and equip the attendee with the fundamentals to work towards competence.
