VT for Learning Related Visual Problems adds to the core VT for Visual Dysfunctions (VT I) course all the necessary testing and therapy activities to successfully diagnose and treat patients with learning related visual problems as well as patients with developmental difficulties. Many of the patients for whom this curriculum is recommended have been labeled dyslexics or "LD/ADD" (learning disability/attention deficit disorder).

    2. Have a knowledge of the history, condition labels, diagnosis and
    prevalence of Learning Related Visual Problems.
    3. Understand eye movement and visual attention as they apply to
    the reading process
    1.30 - 3.00pm The relationship between
    optometry & education
    1. Understand the synergistic relationship between optometry and
    education.
    2. Understand different approaches through the examination of
    case studies:
    3. Understand the education approach, the medical approach, the
    Orton approach and the optometric approach.
    3.30 - 5.00pm Dyslexia diagnosis and
    treatment
    1. Understand dyslexia diagnosis and treatment
    2. Learn the meaning of Lexeme/Phoneme and Grapheme.
    3. Learn methods of reading and spelling
    DAY 2
    9 - 10.30am The Mechanism of Visual
    Attention
    1. Attention, figure ground, scan patterns, regressions and
    optometric concerns will all be explored.
    2. VT goals will be addressed.
    3. Gain an understanding of Eye Movements and Reading
    11 - 12.30pm Understanding the
    Magno/Parvo channels
    1. Understand the Magno/Parvo cellular neurological channels in
    vision
    2. Understand how they are used in reading
    3. Understand Left- right / top down processing and M cell pathway
    in intermittent central suppression
    1.30 - 3.00pm Vision and Color 1. Understand the history, science of light, Syntonic color
    2. Understand contrast sensitivity, lighting and filters,
    3. Understand the use of Irlen lenses and the effects on reading
    3.30 - 5.00pm Eye Movements &
    Reversals
    1. Describe the attributes of a good sight reader
    2. Discuss Testing considerations
    3. Understand Reversals, and the relationship between ocular
    motor control and laterality/directionality
    DAY 3
    9 - 10.30am Behavior Modification 1. Behavior Modification will be explored.
    2. Principles and methods of reinforcement will be presented.
    3. Negative reinforcement and motivation will be discussed
    11 - 12.30pm Performance Testing
    Overview
    1. Achieve an overview of Performance Testing
    2. Have an understanding of the different testing options
    3. King Devec Saccadic Test
    1.30 - 3.00pm Performance Tests in detail 1. Be introduced to the Wold Sentence Copy Test
    2. Understand the application criteria for this test
    3. Explore results of testing
    3.30 - 5.00pm Eye Movements 1. Understand eye movements including fixations, regressions,
    duration of fixation
    2. Explore the concepts of reading speed and reading
    comprehension
    3. Understand the use of eye movement recording devices
    DAY 4
    9 - 10.30am Learning to use tests 1. Use Jordon Left/Right Reversal Test
    2. Use Developmental Test of Visual Perception
    3. Use Gates Oral Reading Test, Spelling Survey and Monroe III
    11 - 12.30pm Learning to use tests (cont) 1. Use Motor Free Visual Perception Test, Piaget Right/Left Test,
    2. MKM Monocular Binocular Reading Test and VMI test.
    3. The Performance Test Decision Tree will also be discussed
    1.30 - 3.00pm VT Grids & Therapy
    exercises
    Conduct Ball games, to include:
    hand ball, punch ball, thumb ball, clap catch, fist catch, fingertip
    catch, look and catch, circles and catch, circles around head, ball
    bunting and ball games videos
    3.30 - 5.00pm Therapy exercises (cont) Other VT exercises, to include:
    Chalkboard Circle Trace, Chalkboard Race tracks, Marble Pie Tin,
    Marble Pie Tin Variations, Chalkboard Double Circles, Larbarge, and
    Wayne Sequencer, Grip Sensory Motor, grippers, Windshield
    Wipers, Mr. Wrist, Push and Pull, Grip Work Video, Column Jumping,
    and World’s Records/Stop Watches
    DAY 5
    9 - 10.30am Laterality and
    Directionality Procedures
    Grip Application
    Know how to use:
    Line Tracing, Mazes, Ann Arbor Letter Tracking, AALT Materials,
    Circle Line Jumping, Metronome, Circle Square on Table, Circle
    Triangle Burner Settings, Slap-Tap
    Know how to use:
    Electronic pen
    Electronic Pen Patterns
    11 - 12.30pm Visualization/Visual
    Imagery
    Know how to use:
    After Images with Objects and Arrow Jumping, Arrow Jumping with
    Diagonals, Mystery Bag, Draw on Back, Rotating Pictures, Spelling
    Method, Spelling Method Word List and Reading Probe.
    1.30 - 3.00pm Computer Therapy
    Programs
    Know how to use:
    1. Moving Windows, Tachistoscope, Optomatters Perceptual,
    Computer Orthoptics, and Soft Tools Selections.
    2. Understand the VAV Method for Fluency.
    3. Know what to look for in doing progress evaluations.
